Sit and Sin

Here it is: The trailer for Sin City.

Best of '04 - Huh?

Here are Time Magazine's picks for the best comics of 2004.

Now, I understand the notion of leaning toward something different. The same-old, same-old is just that — it isn't innovative or inspiring. But there's a difference between having an eye for underground comics and being totally out of touch with the comics market. Unfortunately, it seems Andrew Arnold is the latter.

His list is so offbeat that it's not useful. 99.9% of comic readers are bound to look at it and think, "huh?" There are only three books on his list that I've even heard of before, and I like to think that I'm fairly in tune with the comics scene.

There's "Bone." Sure, it's nice to see it collected in a single volume, but so what? It's nothing different — these books have been available for years, but suddenly they're noteworthy again, just because they're in a thicker package?

There's "Locas," a "Love & Rockets" collection. Again, it's being praised simply for being packaged together, not for delivering anything new.

And there's "Eightball." I've never read "Eightball," but it pops up with Eisner nominations every year. And indie comic snob critics pick it among the year's best every year. Every damned year. OK, we get it! "Eightball" is good. Move on and salivate over something else.

As for the rest of the fare on Arnold's list, I'm with the "huh?" crowd. And since I'm so unimpressed with the selection of titles that I have heard of, I'm not inclined to bother checking out the rest. Since the point of any such list is to turn readers on to something they might not have caught otherwise, this one is a total failure.

Good News for Ultimate Iron Man

Orson Scott Card to Launch Marvel's Ultimate Iron Man
Marvel Comics has announced that award-winning sci-fi author Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game) will pen the Ultimate Universe adventures of billionaire Tony Stark for the all-new Ultimate Iron Man, which is scheduled to launch in 2005.

Illustrated by Andy Kubert (1602), Ultimate Iron Man will mark Card's first foray into comics writing. The initial storyline will center on Stark's childhood, during which his parents' experiments with recreating and rebuilding human skin/armor lead to the death of his mother. This tragic event will provide the foundation for Card to delve into Stark's development as a man and a super-hero.

"I'm an enormous fan of Orson's writing, and our assistant editor Nick Lowe has made it his personal mission to get Mr. Card to write Iron Man," said Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada. "Iron Man is a strong and much-beloved character in the Marvel Universe. I know that Orson's new exploration and defining of him as a super-hero will delight traditional comic fans and definitely appeal to a whole new audience of fans drawn to the science fiction element in his storytelling."

Look for Ultimate Iron Man #1 in the January Marvel Previews.

In this column, everybody dies!

From the Decatur Daily...

'New Avengers' writer Bendis sweeps away the old
What on Earth has become of the world's mightiest heroes?

In the "Avengers Disassembled" story running through "Avengers" issues 500 through 503, superstar comic-book writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist David Finch carve a path of destruction that leaves the 40-year-old Marvel Comics super team in a shambles.

In issue No. 500, over the span of a few pages, Bendis kills off third-string Avengers Jack of Hearts and Ant Man. Then, he kills The Vision, a longtime team member and a fan favorite.

But the worst is still to come. In issue No. 502, he kills Hawkeye, another popular member of the team, and reveals that the villain behind it all is the Scarlet Witch, another longtime Avenger, who in a fit of madness takes out her personal frustrations on everyone around her.

It's a dark day for the Avengers. Although he has proven himself on books like "Powers" and "Daredevil," Bendis has no idea how to approach the Avengers, so he doesn't. In effect, they are supporting characters in their own book.

Incidentally, the article's author, Franklin Harris, has been know to frequent Haven. He's often writing about comics in his "Pulp Culture" column.

Comics for troops

For bored soldiers in Iraq, it's Captain America to the rescue
Comics are hot new additions to the packages leaving here for Iraq this winter. It's all thanks to a Huntsville comics store.

"I was watching the news and seeing all of the things that people were sending over there," said Scott Matkin of Comic Odyssey at 2312 S. Memorial Parkway. "I thought, 'What can we do? What do we have?' Well, we have comics."

That was some 3,000 comic books ago. Another 1,200 have been collected so far this week in a second drive. The store is accepting donated comics through Saturday.

Shipping the comics to Iraq is where Moms on A Mission comes in. That Athens-based nonprofit has sent hundreds of boxes to the troops in the past year and a half. Just Wednesday, another 100 boxes went out at a postage cost of $2,000.

Hasn't Haven been doing this for a couple months? Where's our mention in this article?

Comics in the news (sort of)

Here's an AP article that appeared in The Times today. The story itself has nothing to do with comics, but check out the photo.
