Picture pages, picture pages

I've been promising Josh for a while that I'll put my convention sketchbooks online, and I finally tackled a big portion of the project. There are still lots of pictures I haven't scanned in yet, but here's a start.

Click on Swamp Thing for more sketches.

Okay, I was expecting this week’s shipment to be small and, generally, of no consequence. Those jerks at Marvel, DC, and everywhere else, however, decided to load us down AGAIN with a huge shipment – the third week in a row that our shipment has been considerably larger than normal. That said, there are some books shipping this week that have been a long time coming. Read on for details:

All Star Batman & Robin #3 – That’s right, ladies and gentlemen; the third issue of this landmark series is FINALLY rearing its beautiful head. Everyone’s been asking, and now, at long last, it’s on its way. Come, buy it, and rejoice.

New Avengers #14 – So this book isn’t exactly late, but it is really, really, really good. I highly recommend that everyone pick it up immediately. That’s why I’m highlighting it and taking the time to write this űber-special paragraph about it. This effort should cause you to recognize the awesomeness of this book and feel compelled to buy it. Please inform me as the success of this ploy as soon as possible. Thank you.

Superman/Batman #23 – Yaaaaawwwwwwwwnnn…That’s right; Rip van Winkle has reawakened, and the next issue of this series finally came out. It waited 20 years (or so it seems), and it finally emerged into the brilliant light of day. History will judge if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, but you can read it and assist in that determination, if you like.

Testament #1 – The Bible continues – sort of. This new series shows where the U.S. is going as a result of things like the Patriot Act, and it has weird correlations to Biblical events. All in all, this is definitely a thinking man’s comic. It also happens to be a really impressive, thought-provoking read. I’ve read it already; that’s why it sounds like I know what I’m talking about.

Ultimate Fantastic Four #26 – Sweeeeet! The introduction of Ultimate Namor has been nothing short of impressive so far, and I’ve been enjoying the heck out of this storyline. The story has been fantastic, and the art work is gorgeous. Pick it up, pick up the previous two issues, read them all: enjoy.

What If?! – What if Daredevil were born in feudal Japan and acquired his blindness and unusual powers there? What if Thor were the herald of Galactus? You can read these cool What It?! issues and find out for yourself! Go on; you know you want to…

Wolverine #37 - Wolverine's got his memories back as a result of House of M. He remembers who he is, where he came from, how old he is, all the people from his past who have died - everything. He doesn't know what became of everyone though, or how things all connected up. So this story is starting to answer a few questions for him and for us, and it ties directly back to the old Origin mini-series that came out a couple of years ago. This storyline has been awesome!!!

X-Factor #2 – The first issue of this series kicked much booty. The second issue should do no less, especially since the first issue ended with such a (forgive the pun) cliff-hanger. Peter David is at his best in a book like this where he can blend a lot of humor, pathos, action, and suspense into a team book. This is awesome!

We Love Katamari!

I think Matt had mentioned this game in the store during one of his recent visits, and after playing a demo of it Davis and I decided to procure a copy (rather, I got Davis hooked on it and he was compelled to leave the store and purchase the game immediately). We've been driving poor David Glass out of his gourd with it ever since. Kerry has also purchased the game and has come out for some double-up katamari rolling action.

I fear that in the near future, those who have until now simply gazed on as the game is played will find themselves experimenting with and finally embracing this colorful, nuanced little exercise in monotony. Even the nay-sayers, who have decried it as 'weird' or 'too Japanese', will no doubt eventually pick up my own Logitech remote Dual Shock II and begin to rock the analogs in spite of themselves.

Riddle me this: What isn't fun about rolling an entire suburb into big ball and casting it into the cosmos to become a new star? Really. I want an answer from one of you Philistines out there.

This is the week that several of the super popular mini-series from the past year come to a close: Rising Stars: Voices of the Dead, Samurai: Heaven & Earth, Secret War, and Ultimate Iron Man. Holy cow! Some other cool stuff is going on this week too; so read on for more details:

Ghost Rider #4 – If this book got any hotter, you wouldn’t be able to hold it. Garth Ennis did something I didn’t think anyone could ever do – he made Ghost Rider cool. It helps that the painted art work in this book is among the most detailed and fluid I’ve seen in years. Excellent!

Samurai: Heaven and Earth #5 – This phenomenal limited series from Ron Marz and Luke Ross is, finally, finishing up. If it weren’t for the fact that it’s so incredibly good and the artwork is so superior, I’d be ticked about this book shipping this late, but it IS that good. It is absolutely worth reading. If you liked CrossGen, this book will definitely appeal to you – it reads very much like a ‘mature’ CrossGen book.

Secret War #5 – FINALLY. At long last, this 5-part Secret War book begun a year ago is closing out. Now we can find out what the heck happens to Shield that all of Marvel’s other titles have been referencing for the past several months. Hope Nick Fury makes it out of this mess alive.

Son of M #1 – Following on the heels of House of M, now we get to find out what happened to the guy behind it all: Quicksilver! He’s the one who talked The Scarlet Witch into freaking out on the world and throwing everything into chaos, and now he’s got to deal with the consequences of what he’s done. Can’t wait to see where this goes, myself. I hope Wolverine gets to sink his claws into him. Anyway, if you followed House of M and X-Men: Decimation, you’re definitely going to want to see where this goes.

X-Factor #1 – X-Factor is back!! It’s been years, but the old team (at least most of it) is back in business, and that means we’ll have a little fun in the mutant-verse again. How can you not love a character who uses the stage name of Strong Guy?! It’s just too good. And Jamie Madrox has actually emerged as a force to be reckoned with in recent years; he’s wised up and figured out what to do with himselves, and it’s been pretty awesome. Looks good, folks!

WizKids supports Local Retailers!

Man, this is a nice change from the usual - mostly manufacturers are pushing hard to sell to people directly on the internet and forego the little guys, the guys like Haven. Many thanks to WizKids for trying to send people to the stores - check out their latest info on HeroClix:

Reports: November 18, 2005 (SEATTLE) - WizKids Inc., creator of the runaway hit games HeroClix and Pirates of the Spanish Main, is proud to announce the debut of the HeroClix Collector’s Club, a program designed to support traditional brick-and-mortar gaming stores by offering customers who purchase from those stores opportunities to purchase special collector’s pieces.

"The HeroClix Collector’s Club is a follow-up program to the recently announced MechWarrior Officer’s Club," said Mike Samora, vice president of Sales and Marketing at WizKids. "What began with the "Buy It By the Brick" program has evolved into a club that supports customers who support their local retailers." Beginning in February with the release of the DC HeroClix: Collateral Damage set, customers who purchase a shrink-wrapped "brick" of 12 Collateral Damage Boosters and send in for the exclusive KRYPTO collector’s edition figure will be enrolled in the HeroClix Collector’s Club. Their membership will give them the opportunity to purchase Collector’s Sets of HeroClix figures before they become generally available, at a reduced price.

HeroClix Collector’s Sets are composed of between five and seven preselected HeroClix figures. The first Collector’s Set is titled DC HeroClix Giants. Future sets will often be determined by the input of the HeroClix community via online voting at http://www.wizkidsgames.com.

GI Joe: Snake-Eyes, Declassified #4 - This limited series has been an awesome look at the origin of everyone's favorite member of the Joe team. Devil's Due is doing a great job with all the GI Joe comics, and this one is near the top of the heap for both quality of story and artwork. Definitely check it out!

There are quite a few first issues coming out this week too - check them out and see if there's not something a little different out there to grab your interest!

Okay, so there aren't a whole lot of titles this week - there are still some great reasons to come down to Haven and pick up your books, because there are some high quality titles shipping Wednesday, and you don't want to miss out!

All Star Superman #1 tries to do for Superman what All Star Batman & Robin is doing for the Dark Knight. You're definitely going to want to grab a copy of this book, which promises to be another smash hit for DC.

Speaking of DC smash hits, Supergirl #3 hits the shelves Wednesday, and if this issue is even remotely like the previous issues, we won't be able to keep it in stock for more than a couple of hours. This series is red hot, and it's moving fast.

Not to be left out in the cold, Marvel hits us with The Books of Doom #1, and we get to dig a little into Dr. Doom's twisted life. Usually these little series from Marvel - and I'm a lifelong Marvel fan - leave me a bit cold, but this one actually looks like it should be worth checking out - give it a shot.

Then there's X-Men: Deadly Genesis #1 - In the aftermath of House of M, Deadly Genesis shows us what happens to the few mutants still left on the planet. Marvel is currently throwing Spider-Man under the bus with their The Other storyline (see me about this for my personal rant on the subject, or hunt the postings archives for my blog rant after Wizard World Chicago about this), but they're kicking some booty in the mutant world again, thank God. It's been a long time since the X-Men knocked me for a loop with a killer story, but House of M, Decimation, and now Deadly Genesis are hitting their stride, and I love it!

Come on out to Haven and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

See you at Haven!

Bruce Wayne's home entertainment center

Here's what every Bat-fan will want for Christmas this year.

Check out this Batman 13" Color TV. What a cool remote!

But I really love the review for this Batman DVD Player.
Does Batman watch a lot of DVDs? Does he hole up in the Bat Cave, make some microwave popcorn and unwind like that? And if so, does he only watch movies about himself, sitting around comparing the relative merits of Michael Keaton vs. Val Kilmer vs. George Clooney vs. Christian Bale? Just some of the questions to ponder when examining this sleekly designed DVD player, branded with design work based on the caped crusader. It has amber backlighting and sidelights along with a futuristic remote control and panel controls on the classic Batman emblem. As a DVD player it works just fine and will easily play even non-Batman films.

Watchmen: An Oral History

There's a 5-page spread on Watchmen (the comic, not the upcoming movie) in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly.

Unfortunately, you have to be a subscriber to read it online. But then, if you're a subscriber, why would you need to read it online?

Haven's NEW HOME (10-17-05)

OK, folks, Haven has moved! We're in our new home, and I think you'll all be pleasantly surprised to discover that we're a scant quarter of a mile from our old home. Not far away at all.

Here's how to get there:

If you're in the parking lot, looking at the store location you're used to, turn to your left, and drive out (over the double speed bump) to the Slaughter Road exit from the shopping center.

Turn RIGHT onto Slaughter Road.

Turn LEFT just to the left of the Heritage Florist shopping center.

Turn RIGHT into the parking lot.

Haven is located at the far right side of the strip.

We've still got the same phone number, so if none of that makes any sense and you have any trouble finding the place, just give me a call at (256) 631-8062 and I'll try to clarify directions if I can. It's taking Knology a little while to get our regular phone line transferred to the new location, but we'll have the same phone number as usual - (256) 430-0505 - as soon as they can get that transferred over.

Anyway, we'll be getting our books on Wednesday as usual - I'll post the invoice below in just a few minutes - so come on by the store and pick up your comics at the new place and hang out with us a while. We look forward to seeing you!

See you at Haven!

Man, this is a huge week! There are a lot of awesome titles shipping this Wednesday, so come check them out ASAP.

Sentry #2 - More of the origin of Marvel’s most powerful, yet most mysterious character.

New Avengers #12 – Who the heck is Ronin?!?! I’m betting it’s Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu. Then again, it could be Iron Fist, with his hair dyed black. Or maybe it’s Nick Fury’s little brother Steven. Come on, Bendis; give us some info here!

Loveless #1 - Brian Azzarello's new hardbitten Western comic hits the stands this week, and it looks awesome. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it actually will be.

Revelations #3 – Paul Jenkins and Humberto Ramos delve further into this fabulous murder mystery in the Vatican. Awesome book!

Wraithborn #2 - This new book/character continues to impress.

JLA Classified #13 – Warren Ellis is telling one heck of a story in series, and Butch Guice’s artwork hasn’t fallen off one bit from his days on Crossgen’s Ruse. This story arc is impressive.

Haunted Mansion #1 – As a big Disney fan, I’m looking forward to finding out how some of the 999 happy haunts ended up in the spooky Gracey Mansion.

And the G.I. Joe Snake-Eyes wall statue, a representation of the cover of the famous Silent Interlude issue, will make an awesome addition to the Haven décor. Yeah, it’s technically for me, but it will look beautiful on the walls of the new Haven!

See you at Haven!

Yeah, I've been waiting as long as anyone else for the All Star Batman & Robin #2 to hit the shelves, and the day is here at long last! This book is going to be awesome!

Fables, likewise, is really starting to cook in this latest story arc, and I'm dying to find out where it's going.

Thor gets a new limited series and, in the past couple of years, his limited series have been awesome, even to someone who isn't normally much of a Thor fan, like me.

The new Wildcats series looks like it's going back to the old Wildcats roots, but with a story this time. If you liked the way back in the day Wildcats, then you should like this one.

See you at Haven!

Normally, in this space, I write little blurbs about some of the hotter titles, but there are so many this week that I just don't have the time to do it. Suffice to say that this week is a comic book lover's dream! Can't wait for Wednesday!!

Man, there are some good titles coming out this week!

Conan has been a consistently excellent book. It is well worth looking into.

Jack Cross is the new Warren Ellis book; so if you're a fan of Warren Ellis, you're definitely going to want to pick this book up ASAP; it's going to be good.

Justice #1 is the new Alex Ross JLA story, and, yes, it came out a couple of weeks ago. We sold out of it in less than 24 hours, but I've managed to get a hold of a few more copies - if you haven't picked this book up yet, don't delay this time; this will be your last chance to get a copy of the first issue!

Monkey in a Wagon versus Lemur on a Big Wheel - I just couldn't resist ordering a book by that title. How could I? It's funny. Admit it, you think it's funny.

Serenity #1 - Yes, it's a 2nd printing, but this book is SO worth it. If you didn't manage to snag a copy of the first print, don't let that deter you; this book is AWESOME, and the movie, which comes out on September 30, is going to be mind-numbing. I HIGHLY recommend this one...

Ultimate X-Men Annual #1 - Normally, I wouldn't think much of an annual, let alone recommend one, but the Ultimates Annual and the Ultimate Spider-Man Annual have both been really good, particularly the Ultimate Spider-Man Annual. I've got faith that this one will be just as good...

See y'all at Haven!

My Wizard World Update and Spider-Man Rant

Matt said I should post this, so here it is - feel free to agree or disagree with the following; that's what the comments section is for. ;-)

For the most part, Wizard World was good. I got to talk to a lot of comics creators, some I've met before and some new acquaintances; I got to see a lot of promos for upcoming books; I got to attend panels where they discussed some interestng comics issues; and I got to hang out with Jeremy and Landon all weekend, and I got to spend a lot of time at the booth of Haven's resident comics artist, Andy Price (with brilliant colorist, Alice!).

Here's some of what I found out: Joe Maduriera, of X-Men and BattleChasers fame, is coming back to comics after several years of working on video games, and he's coming back home to Marvel. I've never been a fan of his anime-ish, disproportional, cartoony looking style, but I'm in the definite minority on that one. Michael Turner, of Soulfire and Fathom fame, also signed a contract with Marvel and will be doing some artwork for the House of Ideas. That, at least, I'm looking forward to.

There's a new independent book coming out that recently got picked up by Speakeasy called Athena Voltaire, and the first issue is scheduled to ship in November/December; it's basically a female version of Indiana Jones, and it's really got the look and feel of the old 30's and 40's serials. The art work is BEAUTIFUL, and the story in their promo book was a lot of fun. We've already got 9 people signed up for it at the store, and I'm pretty excited about that - I love it when we can get behind a small independent book and support someone who doesn't have the backing of the big companies. Check out the Athena Voltaire promo book and my sketch from the book at the store!

I got to talk to Brian Michael Bendis, writer of Ultimate Spider-Man, New Avengers, Daredevil, and House of M, for about half an hour, and that was extremely cool. He's a funny guy - imagine that. We had a good discussion about the way he writes Spider-Man versus Ultimate Spider-Man. That was awesome.

I got a Walt Simonson sketch of Thor that's very simple, but gorgeous. He wasn't doing sketches, and he told me that, which was cool - I opted to talk his wife Louise, who used to write Meridian and a million other titles, since they were there together - within seconds of our striking up a conversation, she looked at him and said, "Walter," in a very authoritative tone; so he drew me a Thor sketch. I love Louise Simonson so much...

I got some other cool sketches from some smaller, independent publishing guys - the guys at the Moonstone (publishers of The Phantom, The Cisco Kid, Revisionary, Kolchak) booth were very cool - and I got to talk comics with some cool folks at all kinds of companies.

I got a Batman sketch from Norm Breyfogle, one of the great Batman artists of all time, and his brother inked it. Norm is the penciller on a new book from Speakeasy Comics called Of Bitter Souls. The first issue just came out this week at Haven - everybody ought to pick it up...

I also sat in on some panels, some of which made me excited about upcoming comics, and some of which ticked me off.

The House of M follow-up will be called Decimation, and it looks pretty cool. If you've been reading House of M or are even remotely interested in the Marvel Universe, you're going to want to read this.

The Ultimate Universe looks like they're keeping a good handle on things; they're only ever going to have 4 or 5 regular monthly titles, which is cool with me. As long as they maintain the level of quality they have now, I'll keep reading the Ultimate books. I love 'em!

The next big Spider-Man story, however, SUCKS.

When J. Michael Straczynski took over Amazing Spider-Man, he started all this weird, metaphysical, spider spirit crap, and Dr. Strange was in the book as often as Spider-Man was. They're taking Spider-Man in that direction again, this time for keeps. He's got organic webshooters now (which happened in the worst story arc of Spectacular Spider-Man I've ever read - by Paul Jenkins, no less, which sucked), and this new story, Spider-Man: The Other, is going to "change the mythology of Spider-Man for good, changing his place in the cosmology of the Marvel Universe." (Notice that part in quotes? That's what they actually said. Doesn't that suck?) Instead of just being a nerd who got bitten by a radioactive spider, he will now be a spiritually aware, mythically oriented character who was ordained by the great spider spirit to be its representative on earth for this generation (kind of like a Slayer). This is the most horrific crap. If I want Dr. Strange, I'll read a Dr. Strange book. Spider-Man is supposed to be a scientific whiz, a bit of a nerd, and an every-man kind of character. He is NOT supposed to be battling Dormammu or Fin Fang Foom as the Chosen One. I cannot express vociferously enough how disgusted I am by the entire concept.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Marvel tried to fix the same unbroken thing in the mid-90's with the clone story, and look where that got them - in bankruptcy. It's ridiculous.

For more rants on this subject, feel free to visit me at the store at any time...or make a comment here and we can get a good debate going...

Of Bitter Souls is Norm Breyfogle's triumphant return to the comics world. His Batman was one of the best since Jim Aparo, and his run on Prime in the Malibu Ultraverse 10 years ago was a smash hit. This book is about vampire hunters in New Orleans, and it looks like it's going to be a lot of fun. Check out the Norm Breyfogle Batman sketch I managed to get at Wizard World!

Ultimate Spider-Man Annual #1 looks awesome too - Definitely check this one out!
