A visit from Morpheus

I had a dream last night that I visited Haven on a Saturday, and along with the usual gaming groups was a "superhero club."

The group was basically four stereotypical comic book dorks — their leader bearing a close resemblance to The Simpsons' Comic Book Guy — who decided that they were going to be superheroes in order to honor the characters they read about.

They were seated in the section of the store behind the bookshelves — where some of the video shelves are. There were four people at their table. Three of them were wearing spandex uniforms that resembled the MiracleMan outfit, but instead of an MM logo on the chest, there was an SH logo (for super-hero). The fourth member of the group was dressed as The Tick.

I expressed my unease about the group to Josh, and he told me something to the effect of "they don't bother us if we don't bother them."

Sith happens

A bunch of the Haven Regulars made the paper again.
A group of hard-core "Star Wars" fans who have watched and dissected the first five movies had some pretty definite opinions about the finale - "Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith" - when they gathered a few days ago. ...

"It's about light sabers," John Burgess said in a condescending tone.

"I don't have a lot of hope for it," Jason Morgan said. "I think (director George) Lucas went in the wrong direction."

"Guess what. Anakin Skywalker turns out to be Darth Vader." Josh Olive, owner of Haven Comics in Madison, said, laughing at the movie's worst-kept secret. "It's the last one; no more waiting."

"I think it's going to be sad," said Liana Thompson.

"It's definitely much darker," said her husband, Dan Thompson.

While her friends were getting excited about the finale, Cris Billingsley acted like she couldn't really care less about all the "Star Wars" buzz. Why?

"Hayden Christensen," Billingsley said in reference to the actor who plays Anakin Skywalker. "I've got the trilogy and don't like any of the new ones. Excited about 'Episode III'? No, I'm more excited about the new 'Harry Potter' movie."

So Long and Thanks for All the Fish

Free Comic Book Day was a big success at Haven, so I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped make it such a great day.

First of all, to all the customers who came in and bought stuff, THANK YOU!! Having some of our regular customers in the store helped to create a little Haven atmosphere for all the folks coming in for the first time; we picked up several new subscribers as a result!

To all the Regulars who helped out - we couldn't have done it without you! Jeremy (Tiptoe) did an awful lot of work behind the scenes to make the day a success, and we owe him a huge debt of gratitude. Creepy Dave also worked a lot in the days leading up to FCBD, and we owe him huge too. John Burgess (End Game) ran HeroClix demos for kids ALL DAY LONG, and he did a great job getting them excited about a game they can come up to Haven and play every weekend! Jason Morgan (The Potential) designed the awesome t-shirts everyone was wearing - and which we sold six of - and he helped out for the entirety of the day, which was much needed. Davis (Mr. Indifferent) helped with some of the earlier in the week planning stuff, and Kerry came in and got people hyped about comics and gaming at Haven. Doug Malcolm ran an excellent Star Wars Minis demo. We had an awful lot of people do an awful lot of work to make this day a success, and I just want all of you to know that we appreciate it, not only for FCBD, but every day. THANKS, GUYS!!

Teeny Titans

Teen Titans game a go for GameBoy
Robin, Cyborg, and the rest of the Teen Titans will battle evildoers on Nintendo's GameBoy Advance later this year. Majesco will publish the game, featuring superheroes from the Cartoon Network and Kids WB cartoon series, based on the DC Comics series. The game will arrive on Xbox, PlayStation2, and GameCube in 2006. In the multi-player superhero action game, players can switch control between all five Titans, as they battle archfoes Slade, Jinx, Gizmo, and Mammoth.

Haven in the news

Oooh... there's an article about Haven and Free Comic Book Day in the Go section of today's Times.
"They say you can't get something for nothing, but they're wrong," store owner Joshua Olive said. "There's absolutely no purchase required to get a free comic book.

"Our visitors on May 7 can get a sneak peek at 'Revenge of the Sith' thanks to a special 'Star Wars' comic. They'll also see The Batman Strikes, a thrilling all-ages title focusing on a young Dark Knight. They can also grab Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four and experience a team-up with these favorite characters."

See Josh's post below for more details about the event.

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY!!

That's right, everybody; it's that time again! And this year, we're trying to make it bigger and better than ever!

First of all, let's get the details out of the way. Free Comic Book Day starts THIS SATURDAY, May 7th, at 10:00, and goes on until the last person has left. This is an all day event, and it should be a ton of fun.

We've got a lot going on:

Free Comics to give away to people of all ages, in genres for just about every taste.

Gaming Demos for War Machine, HeroClix, Mage Knight, Star Wars Minis, Munchkin, and the brand new Anachronism.

A drawing for a $50.00 gift certificate.

Professional Comics Artist Andy Price will be doing FREE sketches for customers! His work is amazing, folks; what better way to get a cool sketch of your favorite superhero than to get it done, for free, by a professional?!

Also, in preparation for Free Comic Book Day, check out tomorrow's newspaper for an article about the event at Haven. Listen to WZYP all week for our really cool radio commercial. Check out Channel 31 WAAY Friday morning at 6:50 a.m. - I'll be on there, touting FCBD to anyone who is awake at that hour, and we'll also have a full-fledged story run on Channel 31 Friday afternoon/evening for the 5:00, 6:00, and 10:00 news to promote the event.

Tell all your friends! We want this to be the biggest and best Free Comic Book Day yet!
