All Flash #1 – On the heels of Flash, The Fastest Man Alive #13, in which some big events took place, comes All Flash #1! Mark Waid is back on the title and so is someone even better: Wally West!! What else is there to say? If you’re not positively certain you’ve signed up for the Flash (all orders for Flash, Fastest Man Alive #14 were automatically translated into orders for this title), you better get to Haven quickly on Wednesday – this book is going to be one of the fastest books off the shelf!
Annihilation Conquest: Quasar #1 (of 4) - Phyla-Vell– the daughter of Captain Marvel–takes center stage. Written by Christos Gage (Wizard Magazine’s “2007 Writer to Watch” and one of Jo Jo’s favorites) and penciled by Mike Lilley (Vampirella), this four-issue limited series follows the quest of Phyla and her companion, the former Avenger known as Moondragon, to obtain the mysterious key to halting the seemingly unstoppable conquest of the universe. Having recently gained the Quantum Bands, but still struggling to master their incredible power, Quasar desperately races across the now-occupied Kree Empire…with a deadly foe (familiar to Avengers fans) hot on her trail!
The Order #1 – This book was originally without a name, then it was called The Champions. Then Marvel remembered that they’ve had several tries at a book called The Champions and that they all sucked. So they renamed it The Order. What is it about, you ask? Good Question. As part of Tony Stark’s 50-State Initiative, The Order is California’s super-team. Each member of the team is a budding Hollywood talent, and they’re all on contract for a year. That’s it. After that, they get replaced. Doesn’t sound too awesome, but then you find out it’s written by Matt Fraction and features art by Barry Kitson and it starts sounding better and better. It’ll definitely be worth checking out.
Programme #1 (of 12) - Looking like a mixture of post-Cold War politics and superhero action from DC/Veritgo, this may be another one of those genius projects from the guy who brought us X-Statix, Peter Milligan. Or it could be a muddled mess of superhero claptrap by the man who brought us Elektra and X-Men, Peter Milligan. Hope for the best but expect the worst – that’s what I always say.
Super-Villain Team-Up: MODOK’s 11 #1 (of 5) - MODOK leading a hand picked band of supervillains in the greatest heist ever! (Weeping) It's like a dream I never dared dream... f-finally coming true! For those of you new to comics, MODOK is the bomb - the perfect, most demented* creation of Jack (King) Kirby, MODOK may well be the greatest comic book character of all time. Okay, so I exaggerate – still, what’s not to love?! This will be a fun book, I guarantee.
Thunderbolts: Desperate Measures – This one-shot by Paul Jenkins follows right on the heels of last month’s incredible story arc finale, dealing with the consequences of a mission that saw many of the Thunderbolts getting their butts handed to them and Bullseye getting his neck broken for him, courtesy of the suddenly awesome American Eagle. Also, Penance, formerly the happy-go-lucky New Warrior named Speedball, is losing it. He’s really going over the edge, and this issue deals primarily with him. Paul Jenkins has a gift for introspective character exploration, and he should really shine in this issue. If you haven’t been reading Thunderbolts lately, pick up the trade as soon as it hits the shelves – it’s amazing.
World War Hulk #2 (of 5) – If you read World War Hulk #1 and loved it, raise your hand. Wow. That’s pretty much everybody. Well, if you liked the first issue, here comes the second! Pick it up quick – it doesn’t seem to matter how many of these things I order, I keep selling out!
Zero Killer #1 – By Arvid Nelson, creator of Rex Mundi, this is another alternate event world, this time set in the future instead of the past – a shattered alternate future, as brutal gangs struggle for supremacy in a New York City ravaged by nuclear war. All that remains of the once mighty city are skeletal, irradiated skyscrapers, inhabited by thugs who abide by their own twisted rules. While crime lords vie for power and amoral paramilitary forces torment survivors of the devastation, one skilled outcast--the mysterious Zero--uses his strength and wits to stay a step ahead of everyone. Working for anyone while pledging allegiance to none, Zero is a bounty hunter who hunts the dregs of a ruined society. This book is going to be very cool, people – give it a shot!
See you at Haven!
