Anna Mercury #1 (of 5) - Warren Ellis introduces you to the sultry Anna Mercury in this all-new color series! Dancing amidst the spires of a city called New Ataraxia, there is a woman who can cloud men's minds, leap across buildings as if weightless, unerringly fire twin automatic pistols in the most insane conditions, and disappear in a crowded room. She fights against the political repression of an insane technocratic society, and she comes from a place that no one in New Ataraxia has ever heard of. And she has one hour to save the city from itself! A high-octane blend of The Shadow, Tomb Raider, retropunk science fiction and 21st-century 'weird pulp' action, Anna Mercury is a headlong adventure serial about a beautiful and mysterious spy-adventurer who is not what she seems!

Frank Frazetta’s Dark Kingdom 1-Shot - DARK KINGDOM roars to life from canvas to the comics page. From amid the clash of steel and decks stained red comes legendary sea raider RED MORDEN, battling his way through an ocean of horror to save the family he holds dear. For love and vengeance, he will face his greatest fears, both real and imagined as he stands alone against a kingdom of darkness.

Secret Invasion #1 (of 8) - SECRET INVASION IS HERE!! Years in the making, months in the teasing...and it all STARTS HERE!! The shape-shifting alien race known as the Skrulls has secretly infiltrated every super-powered organization on Earth with one goal...full-scale invasion! In this DOUBLE-SIZED first issue, page after page unveils reveal after reveal and shocking moment after shocking moment! Brian Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu leap off the pages of mega-hit New Avengers and deliver a story that will change the Marvel Universe forever. THE MARVEL UNIVERSE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME!! Not sure I believe that last part, but it should be worth checking out anyway. :-)

Young X-Men #1 - In the wake of Messiah CompleX, there are no X-Men and young mutants Rockslide, Blindfold and Dust are alone and directionless. Until the day Cyclops recruits them to hunt the new incarnation of the Brotherhood - and kill them. Joined by a pair of new recruits, the young X-Men learn a hard truth about the world post-Messiah CompleX: sometimes old allies make for deadly enemies.

Zorro #2 - Dynamite continues the return of yet another Legend as Matt Wagner unveils the all-new Zorro! Writer, art director, and cover artist Matt Wagner is in command of this all-new 'year one' Zorro comic book adventure. Similar in tone and scope to Dynamite's acclaimed Lone Ranger series, Zorro also features artist Francesco Francavilla who complements Wagner's pulp action writing! Issue #2 continues the frantic pace set by issue #1 as we learn more about Diego's past, while in the present, his alter-ego Zorro is making things more and more difficult for the brutal Gonzales as the two come face-to-face!

Huntsville Gaming Convention?

So maybe it is just me, but what is with the gaming scene in Huntsville? (I’ve been trying to understand it for almost 3 years now since moving here.) Oh sure, I know there are some gamers that get together at Haven and the BookMark to game, but what I don’t understand is… where’s the con??? As far as I know, there isn’t a gaming convention in Huntsville or anywhere nearby, yet this town is full of geeky engineers so we should be spilling over with techie, gaming, and other hobby stuff. Are there just not enough gamers in the area to financially pay for a gaming con? Do the gamers around here not support cons (i.e., don’t attend, don’t run games, etc.)? Anybody got the answer? And if so, will you share it? (This may lead me to post about why no posts on Haven’s blog ever have comments/replies…)

Will the word "Incredible" make it better?

Sure the Hulk still looks like Play-Doh, but Edward Norton as Bruce Banner has got to be better, right? ... Right?

Oh, please let it be better.

Here's the trailer.

Buddha: Story of Enlightenment #1 - A stunning adaptation of The New York Times Bestselling novel by Deepak Chopra (Kama Sutra Lifer After Death: The Burden of Truth), realized by visionary comics writer Joshua Dysart (Violent Messiahs, Swamp Thing). BUDDHA: A TALE OF ENLIGHTENMENT is an emotionally evocative fictional look at one of the most iconic figures in philosophy and spiritualism: Buddha. We begin with war and strife and the birth of a being destined to become a leader. But will he lead as a king with wealth and power or choose a different path of poverty, compassion, and enlightenment? This book will contain a special foreword by author Deepak Chopra and a unique extended spread. It’s not every day you see a comic book about Buddha. Had to give this one a try…

New Avengers #39 SII - The Secret Invasion is here! Award-winning artist David Mack brings his amazing talent to NEW AVENGERS to illustrate a major story in the life of Echo! Have the Skrulls infiltrated the Avengers? Is Maya Lopez the only one with proof? Will she live to tell the tale? All this and a major Avengers hook up! Really, what more could you ask for in a comic book? More Buddha? Sorry, not here, folks. This is just where we find out how enlightened the Skrulls really are.

Return of the Gremlins #1 (of 3) - Our story opens on Gus, a man visiting England from the States. His grandfather's house is part of his inheritance, and he plans to sell it as soon as he can. Even though the locals think the house is haunted--something Gus immediately dismisses--a slick man named Mr. Snide promptly appears with his "associates" and makes an offer. But when Gus declines to sign over the house right then and there, Snide reveals that his arrangement with the mayor will seal the deal soon enough! Left to explore the place, Gus experiences a series of very odd events. How did his folded clothes end up in knots? Who on earth would drill a hole in a coffee cup? Certainly not ghosts, but for a former fighter pilot's abandoned old home, it sure is clean…When the house's tiny residents decide to take extreme measures, Gus will meet the gremlins up close and personal-just like his grandfather, who first discovered them sixty years ago!

* Based on the classic Disney characters created by world-renowned author Roald Dahl!

Star Trek: New Frontier #1 - In its first year of Star Trek comics, IDW Publishing broke out of the box with marquee titles like Star Trek: Year Four, the blockbuster Klingons: Blood Will Tell and the fan-favorite Alien Spotlight one-shots. Now, IDW takes it to the next level with the launch of its Star Trek: Second Stage lineup, featuring some of the top Star Trek creators in comics, books and television. It all begins here! New York Times Best-Selling author and comics legend Peter David, the hand-picked creator of the first Star Trek crew designed exclusively for print, celebrates the tenth anniversary of his creation by writing New Frontier's first-ever comic book series, showcasing all-new stories and the official continuation of the hit books. In issue one, 'Slingshot,' the most dangerous experimental vessel in the galaxy-a prototype time ship-has vanished, and it appears that the man who stole it is none other than Starfleet Admiral Edward Jellico. Only Mackenzie Calhoun and the crew of the Excalibur have a hope in finding him before the ship, intended purely for scientific exploration, is used to disrupt the space-time continuum. With art by Stephen Thompson (Beneath the Valley of Rage), who also delivers four painted covers available as a Quad Coverô, all bound in the same issue. Thompson also provides a bonus incentive cover featuring 'Starfleet Captain Peter David' in the command chair!

Wolverine: First Class #1 - Return with us again to the early days of the all-new, all-different, X-Men for all-new solo adventures of Wolverine and Kitty Pryde! The next generation of students has arrived at Xavier's School--Colossus, Storm, Nightcrawler, and the mysterious Wolverine--and with them, new teaching methods. Professor X pairs up green recruit Kitty Pryde with the been-everywhere, done-everything vet Logan, and neither of them are all that happy about it. But unless they learn to work together, neither of them will come back from their first mission together alive!

See you at Haven!!

WE'RE OFF TO SEE THE WIZARD

I’m new to Haven Comics’ blogs so I thought I’d make a quick introduction:
I am the great and powerful Aahz (10 points if you know the Asprin reference), gaming addict (card, computer, board, miniature, or role-play) and all-around good guy. I’ve been playing games as often as I could bug somebody into playing with me (and since the advent of computer games, as often as I could find the time to sit down at the good ol’ PC). I even started playing role-playing games at the tender age of 6 or so (my oldest brother is 12 years older than me and I wouldn’t leave him or his friends alone so they let me roll the cool dice). Since I’m always walking into Haven and waxing poetic about this game or that game, Josh asked me to start contributing to this blog. (I think it was his polite way to get me to shut up since now I have to save it for the blog.)

I suppose that is enough about me, let’s talk about gaming! Specifically, there is a gaming convention coming up that I always enjoy and is not too far away for those of you in Huntsville. MidSouthCon 26 (http://www.midsouthcon.org) will be held in Memphis, TN, March 28th-30th. It generally has a varied assortment of games and other activities such as movies and seminars… oh, and plenty of gamers. Additionally, I like the convention benefits for Game Masters; running one game gets you into the convention at half price, running two games is only a $5 convention fee, and finally, running three games (like yours truly) is free admission (hey, you’re basically a convention volunteer at that point). The only draw-back is that the hotel is not located in the best part of Memphis, so although I consider the hotel and parking lot fairly safe (fenced with security cameras and lots of gamers milling about), I wouldn’t exactly explore the surrounding neighborhood without at least a general idea of where you are going and what to expect.

Fantastic Four #555 - THE EARTH IS DOOMED! Buy this issue for a first-look at mankind's new home. Also, the Torch gets nekkid with a super-villain. If you can’t tell by that official solicit for this book, Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s run on FF continues with this issue!

But once they find it, will they be able to face it? This Lone Ranger one-shot special is a great jumping-on point for new fans and readers as well as an excellent companion issue to the Eisner-Award nominated series!

Salvation Run #5 (of 7) - Trapped between the warring tribes led by The Joker and Lex Luthor, Catwoman is forced to make a deadly decision that will change several lives forever. Serenity: Better Days #1 (of 3) - Joss Whedon returns to the world of his blockbuster film Serenity with the three-issue comics series Better Days. Better Days revisits everyone's favorite space cowboys in this thrilling, action-packed adventure, with Mal and his crew on a heist that promises a big payoff--what's surprising is that this heist just might make good on that promise. Whedon reunites with Brett Matthews and Will Conrad, his collaborators on the best-selling 2005 series Those Left Behind. Adam Hughes joins the team for covers. This is a MUST HAVE for any fan of Firefly or Serenity!!!!

Moving on to the D&D Infinity Edition

Gary Gygax, who co-created the fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons and helped start the role-playing phenomenon, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva. He was 69.
He had been suffering from health problems for several years, including an abdominal aneurysm, said his wife, Gail Gygax.

Gygax and Dave Arneson developed Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game known for its oddly shaped dice became a hit, particularly among teenage boys, and eventually was turned into video games, books and movies.

Gygax always enjoyed hearing from the game's legion of devoted fans, many of whom would stop by the family's home in Lake Geneva, about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee, his wife said. Despite his declining health, he hosted weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons as recently as January, she said.

"It really meant a lot to him to hear from people from over the years about how he helped them become a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman, what he gave them," Gygax said. "He really enjoyed that."

Dungeons & Dragons players create fictional characters and carry out their adventures with the help of complicated rules. The quintessential geek pastime, it spawned a wealth of copycat games and later inspired a whole genre of computer games that's still growing in popularity.
