Superman Debuts New Look! (10-25-10)

-- Courtesy of CNN --

First Wonder Woman got a makeover, and now the Man of Steel is debuting a new look of his own. The redrawing will appear in“Superman: Earth One," a new graphic novel retelling of the origin of the super hero which DC Comics says is “Superman for the 21st century."

Does the modern Superman look a little familiar to you Twi-hards? As the New York Post points out, he bears “more of a resemblance to Robert Pattinson from the ‘Twilight’ movies than Christopher Reeve from the Superman films.” The new Superman still has the inky black hair and buff bod – six pack and all – but features more of a brooding look than the super hero's past clean-cut appearance.

The book is written by J. Michael Straczynski, known for writing Superman, Wonder Woman and Babylon 5 and drawn by artist Shane Davis who has previously worked on Green Lantern and the Superman/Batman series.

The new graphic novel series does not replace the original Superman comics, but is merely a reinterpretation of his younger years. The book goes on sale next Tuesday.

What do you think of the new Superman?

My two cents: Go look at what JMS did to the Amazing Spider-Man. Go ahead; I'll wait. Yeah, look at the travesty that was. Horrible.

JMS' original work is great stuff (Midnight Nation rocks!), but why anyone would allow him to ever mess with established properties again after the Spider-Man fiasco is beyond me. Ok, ok, his take on Thor was...interesting. Having Asgard hover over Oklahoma was a really, really peculiar choice, but it wasn't bad.

Fine, I'll change my stance to say that JMS should never be allowed to touch A-list characters again. B-listers or long-dead guys like Thor? Sure. Knock yourself out. But Superman AND Wonder Woman? What is DC thinking?!?!?

At least this Superman book is DC's version of Marvel's Ultimate Universe and won't affect (for the time being) the established continuity of their universe.

John Byrne's Next Men Return!! (10-25-10)

You know how, sometimes, something can be picked up off the shelf and dusted off and it looks just as good as new? I'm really hoping the return of John Byrne's Next Men turns out like that. When it first hit the shelves in the early '90s, it was part of Dark Horse's Icons imprint - the same imprint that started Hellboy and Sin City - and John Byrne's books (he had a few under this imprint) were really, really good, but they somehow never attained the cult status of Mike Mignola's and Frank Miller's creations.

IDW thinks that there's enough left in the Next Men to give them another whirl, almost 20 years after the first time they showed up, and John Byrne is game to revive them too. I'll definitely be there to see how the new series stacks up against the old one, and I've got my fingers crossed.

If you liked the initial run back in the day, give the new series a try when it hits the shelves in a couple of months; if nothing else, it'll be nice to revisit the old characters and see how they're doing. I'm looking forward to this!

Gamma World Unleashed at Worldwide D&D Game Day TOMORROW!! (10-23-10)

Grab a friend and get ready to celebrate the launch of the new D&D Gamma World Boxed Set. Mutate a brave new hero and be ready to take on just about anything! Experience the return of an old classic in a new play experience using the D&D 4th Edition rules engine! The D&D Gamma World game is a fast, furious romp through a post-apocalyptic Earth where mutant heroes face-off against killer robots, alien weirdness, and strange irradiated creatures.

Gamma World Game Day: Trouble in Freesboro It’s shocking how the Big Mistake completely obliterated some places while others got by relatively unscathed. Freesboro falls into the latter camp, but if Genghis Tangh has his way, life will never be the same for the mutants of Gamma Terra. Delve into the origins of the Big Mistake as you take on Tangh and his forces! Pick up a D&D Gamma World Boxed Set, a few booster packs of power cards, and create your own characters in an exciting new Game Day experience! A D&D Gamma World Game Day adventure designed for 4-6 characters of 1st level.

An exclusive 4-hour adventure called Trouble in Freesboro, written by Robert Schwalb, includes an online feature to the game that if accessed during game play can provide the players with a valuable clue. Players purchase 2 D&D Gamma World booster packs and create their own characters when they arrive at a participating location to play. DMs are required to have a copy of the D&D Gamma World Boxed Set and the adventure materials, available prior to the event day in the game day kit, to prepare to run their game. In addition to a poster map and the adventure, the game day kit also contains 2 different D&D Gamma World cards, available nowhere else, and awarded to players and DMs just for participating!

Kerry Jordan, long time game organizer at Haven, is an avid Gamma World fan, and he'll be putting players through their paces in this fun setting. I've played older versions of the game with Kerry before, and it's a blast. Definitely come out and give it a whirl - trust me; you'll have a good time!

And Son of Satan battles a possessed child killer along with the murderous voices in his head. Turok, Son of Stone #1 – Turok, wandering warrior from a far land, rescues Andar, son of a Chiricahua chief, from the ruthless King Maxtla and his Aztec horde. Pursued into a vast cavern, prey and predators are swept away by an unimaginable force to a savage, timeless land of nightmares and miracles, where dinosaurs thunder and rampage. Beset by bloodthirsty enemies and beasts, Turok and Andar encounter an even deadlier threat-the fearsome Panther People and their mesmerizing goddess, Aasta. Turok, Son of Stone returns, reimagined by legendary writer Jim Shooter and illustrated by hot new talent Eduardo Francisco (Victory, Executive Assistant: IRIS).

Also included in this can't-miss issue is the newly colored, classic Bernie Wrightson/Len Wein Batman story 'Night of the Bat,' which originally appeared in SWAMP THING #7! Deadpool Max #1 – When the world has a problem that's bigger than any government, special ops team, or C.I.A. smart bomb can solve, they call in the one man crazy enough to solve it: Deadpool. Possibly unkillable mercenary, definite weapons expert and swordsman, hopeless romantic, nutjob. It's that last part that presents a small problem and that's where Agent Bob steps in. Bob's sole charge in life is to point Deadpool at the problem and pull the trigger -- not any easy task when your agent is a dime short of a dollar and three cards shy of a full deck, and even harder when you've gone deep cover in the impenetrable fortress of Hammerhead, the Grand Don of the most powerful criminal organization in the world, and your unkillable super agent is head over heels for a busty French maid baker named Inga...well, you begin to see the inherent problems of the job. But no one can take it like Bob, no one can dish it like Deadpool, and no one can show you every last detail of it like MAX! You may think you know Deadpool have no idea.

Shuri, the new Black Panther, has already tried (and failed) to stop this monster -a defeat that owed as much to her own reckless rage than it does to Klaw's power. So, Shuri turns to the person who knows more about battling inner rage than anyone.
