Pony-pocalypse 2012: The Reckoning

A couple months ago, Big Josh told me he'd ordered $500 worth of My Little Pony #1. I didn't say anything at the time, but I thought he'd lost it. Haven isn't a big store, and $500 is more than we bring in some weeks. And he spent all that on one comic!? A comic that most of our regular customers aren't even that interested in? Hoo boy.

Well, it took several minor miracles to pull it off, but our Pony Party exceeded all our expectations! Not only did we sell through that initial order, but we had to scramble to get more books from the wonderful people up at Midtown Comics. It took a lot of effort from a lot of people, but special thanks has to go out to Kalisa and Judson. These two guys worked harder than anybody to bring this all together.

Now we just have to figure out what we're gong to do for My Little Pony #2! (Yeah right. We're not doing anything for issue #2. In fact, if anybody even mentions ponies to me in the next three months, I'm shipping them straight to the glue factory.)

Andy Price signs a copy of My Little Pony for a fan. Pinkie Pie, AKA Haven's special events coordinator, Kalisa. She made the decorations, planned the children's activities, and is all-around awesome to boot! The coloring table was a hit with fans of all ages. Rainbow Dash was a huge hit. We had several people taking shifts inside the suit, (that thing get hot!), so I'm not sure who that is in the photo. Babies love Big Josh. Kalisa helps out at the cookie decorating station. Judson got this cake specially made for Andy. It reads, "Congratulations on 100,000 sales."
Big Josh and Rainbow Dash fight over whose friendship is more magical. Some of our costume contest participants. And again, a huge thanks for Midtown Comics for sending us those extra books!

X-Wing Minatures Game

Woot! We have the new X-Wing miniatures game!

From the manufacturer's website:
Control the most advanced starfighters and outstanding pilots in the galaxy! In X-Wing Miniatures Game, you take the role of squad leader and command a group of merciless Imperial or daring Rebel pilots in furious ship-to-ship space combat. Featuring stunningly detailed and painted miniatures, X-Wing recreates exciting Star Wars space battles from small engagements of only a couple of crafts, to large conflicts where multiple squadrons clash. Select and equip your ships, pick your crew, plan your attack, and complete your mission.
And here's a review from Geekdad:
This is serious fun. Gameplay is easy to learn and moves very quickly. While the box advertises a 2-player game lasting about 20 minutes, there’s nothing to stop you from playing 10 players in a deep space battle that lasts an hour or more. Rounds tick off without a thought and – if you play in the suggested four square feet of play area – you’ll find that there’s no place to run. I have plans of printing out a big star field to play on … and then conquering a galaxy the size of our dining room table.
The core set of X-Wing comes with an x-wing fighter, two TIE fighters, along with both advanced and "quick start" rules. We also have TIE fighter expansion packs with upgraded pilots and tactics.

Pony-pocalypse part 1: the pre-pony-pocalypsing

Our My Little Pony #1 launch party had us pretty stressed. I've mentioned before this was the first ever signing ever at Haven, and it's for a local artist we all love and want to see do well. Oh yeah, it also happens to be for one of the biggest comics of the year. We've spent so much time sweating the details that some Havenites started calling it Pony-pocalypse.

So I'm happy to report our launch party was a huge success! Even bigger than we'd hoped. Andy Price (along with his wife Alice) came out and signed books for hours. Plenty of regulars and a ton of new faces came out to support this hometown artist. And if you missed it, we're having Andy come back December 15th for our full-fledged pony party!

In the meantime, you can read this review of My Little Pony #1 from Comics Alliance: Price's art is beautifully expressive and full of personality. Everything looks detailed and fully realized without being so busy that it's hard to follow, with a ton of amazing background gags that include ponies based on the Blues Brothers and Donald Sutherland.
